Premiere Oklahoma Moving Company – 405-445-7637

If you plan on moving to Oklahoma City this summer, you better get ready to spend a lot of time outdoors! Even if you are not an avid outdoorsman, chances are, you will want to spend as much time on a bike as possible once you move to Oklahoma City. This month, at the inaugural bike ride and family festival, the new West River Trail is scheduled to be opened to the local community.

Connecting Lake Overholser to the south bank of the Oklahoma River, the new 7.5 mile trail is just one out of three that will be opening in Oklahoma City in the next coming years. Local bike riders are thrilled to have the new trail, especially members of the Oklahoma Bicycle Society, and Oklahoma City movers are excited to see what it will mean for not only current, but future residents.

President of the bicycle society, Bill Elliot, expressed that he’s, “really excited about the prospects of having a new trail. The benefit is now we can connect the Oklahoma River Trail to Overholser, which connects to Hefner, and all of a sudden we’ve opened up an expansive network of trails for cyclists of all abilities.”

Part of the allure of adding bike trails that rival those of Tulsa’s, is due to the potential for it to make the Oklahoma City community more active as a whole.

Project manager of the new bike trails, David Todd, further supports this notion by stating that, “it promotes healthy lifestyles and a way to get outdoors and have some fun in a safe way. We think it will be very well used. We’ve already had a lot of interest in it and it hasn’t even opened.” The Oklahoma Bicycle Society will be leading the first ride on the trail and inviting anyone who is interested to join them on one of their 500 rides they do per year. If you are moving to Oklahoma City, take a break from moving and partake in the first bicycle ride on the West River Trail.

Oklahoma City is no stranger to tornados; they happen quite frequently and sometimes residents are left with just a few hours or even minutes, to find shelter. If you are moving to Oklahoma City, hopefully you and your family came up with a family communications plan and had an emergency kit packed before there was ever threat of a storm, but if not, there are some things that you can do to help protect yourself when a tornado unexpectedly decides to touch down.

If you are in a sturdy building, i.e. a building that is in the ground, getting to the lowest floor possible is the safest course of action. On top of that, getting as far inside is also the safest course of action. You want to be away from all windows and doors. Your goal should be to put as many walls between you and the tornado. Also, it is recommended that you use your arms to protect your head and neck. Tornados usually come and go very quickly, so the faster you move the better.

If you are in something like a mobile home or a building that is not secured to the ground, moving to a building that is secured to the ground before the tornado watch goes to a warning, is best. Once in a building that has a foundation and is secured to the ground, the same safety precautions apply.

If you find yourself outside when there is threat of a tornado, finding shelter should be your top priority.

Anyone that is a Tornado Alley native, along with Oklahoma City movers, will tell you that tornados are no joke. Since the beginning of weather record keeping in Oklahoma City, there have been nine major tornados, with eight being F4s and one being an F5. For those who are not familiar with the tornado scale, an F5 tornado is the strongest tornado; it is the equivalent to a category 5 hurricane. An F5 means that there was an incredible amount of damage left behind. If you are moving to Oklahoma City, tornados are something you must be prepared for.

Tornados usually come with little warning, so most of the safety precautions you can take usually happen before there is even threat of a storm. The most important thing to do when planning to tackle a tornado rather than letting it tackle you – is to build an emergency kit and come up with a family communication plan. Emergency kits should include basic items that you may need, in the event of an emergency; such as: food, water, clothing, flashlights, and essentials for everyone in your family.

Sometimes after a big storm, it takes a while for help to come, so include enough food and water to make sure that everyone is taken care of. As for a family communications plan, an idea of where to meet or how to exit the house, or take shelter in the event of an emergency, is crucial. If there is ever a tornado watch or warning, the National Weather Service usually alerts everyone in the affected area.

Oklahoma City is known for its steak, Bricktown, and oh yea, tornadoes and earthquakes. But do not let that scare you away! Every region has its own weather concerns, and OKC is no different. But as tornado season revs up, your Oklahoma City relocation company thinks you should know what to expect and how to prepare your family.

The tornadoes began late last month in Moore and south Oklahoma City. The relatively weak tornadoes reached about 70 mph. Even so, the tornadoes hit without much warning, and city officials did not have much time to prepare. This means that when you hear of a thunderstorm warning in Oklahoma City, seek shelter and make sure your kids are safe, because you never know when a thunderstorm can shift into a tornado.

Earthquakes, which have no particular season, also caused a bit of commotion earlier this month. Three small quakes shook Medford and Crescent. They reached 3.0, 3.3 and 3.4 on the Richter scale. No injuries or damages were reported, so your neighbors are fine! But the earthquakes served as a reminder to take cover when severe weather strikes.

If you are new to Oklahoma City, do not be afraid of tornadoes or earthquakes. They are a natural part of the weather cycle out here in the Midwest. It is, however, important to be prepared. Your Oklahoma City movers want to make sure you have somewhere sturdy to seek shelter and you know where your children are at all times.

If you have recently moved to Oklahoma City with your family and are looking for somewhere fun to go with the kids, then the Oklahoma City Zoo is a great idea. As of late, the OKC Zoo has welcomed several new baby gorillas. Your Oklahoma City packing and moving company knows that your kids would love to see these new baby gorillas. They are being transitioned into the zoo’s main population, so your family will be able to enjoy them soon enough!

The latest addition to the OKC Zoo’s gorilla troop was born late last month, to parents Emily and Togo. Emily is 29, and this was her fifth birth. Togo had another baby since arriving to the OKC Zoo in 2012, but the baby now lives at the Toledo Zoological Gardens. OKC Zoo zoologists are not sure of the new baby’s sex, so it is does not yet have a name. For now, Emily and her baby are bonding, and she has taken to her infant. Zoo keepers report that she is very attentive and caring.

Other recent additions to the zoo’s gorilla troop include Kamina, who was born last August, but was moved to the Cincinnati Zoo after her mother did not take to caring for her. Liam was born in 2013, and he still resides at the OKC Zoo.

The OKZ Zoo is the perfect family day destination for you and your kids, now that you have settled into your new home. Make a day of it, and be sure to visit Emily and her baby gorilla bundle of joy!

If you are new to the Oklahoma City area and have children in elementary school, it is only a matter of time before you hear about the Rolling Thunder Book Bus. The renovated school bus travels to local elementary schools and children centers, to promote literacy and a love of reading. Every student that visits the bus receives a free book, so kids get pretty stoked when it comes to their school (because who doesn’t love free stuff?). The bus recently celebrated giving away 100,000 books to local Oklahoma City children.

Players from the Oklahoma City Thunder joined the celebration at Buchanan Elementary School. Nick Collison and Jeremy Lamb signed books and spoke with children about the importance of reading and literacy. Many stops included a special guest; like the Thunder players or Thunder Girls.

The bus, which is sponsored by American Fidelity, began in 2009 and has been traveling to support its literacy mission ever since. The Rolling Thunder Book Bus carries about 3,000 books for kids to choose from, and they range from pre-school level to fifth grade reading material. Players, coaches, and other Thunder associates, are always happy to get behind the worthy cause of literacy and helping kids develop a passion for reading.

If you think the Rolling Thunder Book Bus will make your child smile, find out if they are coming to your school soon! It is a great way to get your child excited about their new home and school (and about reading!). Your Oklahoma City packing and moving specialists think that it is a worthy cause, and we know you will too!

New to Oklahoma City and looking for somewhere that the whole family will enjoy? Then head over to Myriad Botanical Gardens in downtown Oklahoma City. Its’ colorful and lush plant life will capture your children’s imagination, and its peaceful gardens may be just what you need to relax. If this sounds up your ally, then you will be glad to hear that Myriad Botanical Gardens just received a $35 thousand grant for new gardens and walking tours.

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation gave the garden the grant through its Parks and Public Space initiative. Its objective is to incorporate public education and fitness into Myriad Botanical Gardens. The garden will accomplish this goal by using grant money for guided tours, as well as self-guided tours. The tours will focus on colorful and drought-resistant plants. These tours will aid in public education and fitness, since the paths for the walking tours can stretch on a great distance and provide exercise to those who take them. The self-guided tours will be free beginning this summer, so it will be a great place to take the entire family.

Other recent work to the Myriad Botanical Gardens, included removing 48 Shantung and Norway hybrid maples that contracted an irreversible disease, and replacing them with 15 new trees. The diseased trees had to be dug up, because they would never recover from their infections. They were replaced with Shurmard oaks, pond cypress, London plane trees, and other types of trees.

Your Oklahoma City packing and moving providers are excited for the planting to begin this spring. The Myriad Botanical Gardens is such a beautiful place to take your family, so make sure to stop by this summer when everything is in bloom!

Oftentimes, we move to be in a larger home, but once we get there, it can seem too big. What to do with all the extra space? Your Oklahoma City packing and moving specialists and the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter hope that you will use the space to adopt a four-legged friend!

In honor of Valentine’s Day and homeless pets across town, the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is hosting Furrever Love. All Valentine’s week long, pet adoptions will be half-price, which amounts to just $30! Stop by any day from February 14th through February 21st, and see if your new home has room for a dog or cat. A pet is a great way to get your kids excited about their new Oklahoma City home! The shelter’s Furrever Love promotion will include activities all week long, including a kissing booth.

Furrever Love week will end on February 21st with another event, All Paws on Deck Community Cleanup Day. The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is looking for volunteers to help them clean their facility, including kennels and barns. Families are encouraged to volunteer together, so if your kids are animal lovers, take them to do a good deed. The shelter also hopes businesses, churches, or community groups will pitch in, so spread the word!

Moving to a new place can be tough on the entire family. Sometimes a new pet can make a world of a difference, especially to your kids. You will be doing a good deed and saving an animal, so visit the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter as soon as you are settled in! To learn more, visit www.okc.gov/animalwelfare.

If you are moving to Oklahoma, you are probably pretty excited about everything that the MAPS 3 program is going to bring to the Sooner State’s capital, Oklahoma City. The 10-year construction program, which is funded by a one-cent sales tax that started in 2010 and will end in 2017, is getting ready for construction downtown. Oklahoma moving companies are excited for the city’s future plans (and all the moving that will come with it!).

Construction will begin on Hudson Avenue with a new sewer line that will run through the park, so get ready for lots of digging and an unsightly, but temporary, giant hole. After sewage is complete, the fun stuff will follow. MAPS 3 architects are calling the planned-area the Convention Center District. It will include residential homes, shopping, retail businesses, plenty of office space, and additional hotels. Oklahoma City businesses have made requests to make the new district pedestrian-friendly, and it seems architects have obliged. Their aim is to make the downtown Convention Center District more city-like.

The MAPS 3 program includes plenty of other plans, including an eight-mile trail that will run parallel to Interstate 44 for bicyclists, runners, and pedestrians. The route will include easy access to the Portland Plaza Shopping Center, Deaconess Hospital, and Will Rogers Park. A streetcar route has also been approved that will run throughout downtown and connected suburban areas.

If you are moving to Oklahoma in the near future, you will have lots to look forward to in the coming years. Call your Oklahoma movers for a stress-free and quick move so you can enjoy all the planned changes!
